Study of Nanocomposites for Electrical Insulation

The dissertation thesis submitted deals with the study of dielectric properties of epoxy nanocomposites containing nanoparticles of inorganic oxides. These nanocomposites may have a promising technologic application for electric insulations in view of their higher resistance against partial discharges; yet information about their behavior in the course of ageing is not available. If at least a partial mass replacement of the currently used epoxy insulation with nanocomposite-based insulations is due to occur, the knowledge of the changes of their dielectric properties in the course of their operation will become indispensable. Within the framework of this dissertation, ensembles of samples of epoxy resins without fillers and with Al2O3, WO3, TiO2 and SiO2 fillers in the form of nanopowders, in concentrations up to 12 wt %, have been prepared. These ensembles have been measured prior to ageing and exposed to long-time (up to 5000 hours) ageing at increased temperatures 200, 250 and 300 °C and in a few cases also at 330 and 360 °C. Samples were measured in the course of ageing roughly in a logarithmic time series after 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 hours. The measured quantities included complex permittivity , internal resistivity i and loss factor tan at temperatures ranging from -153 °C to +167 °C and in the frequency range 10-2 – 106 Hz. Changes in nanocomposites have been investigated using not just dielectric spectroscopy measurements, but other methods, too, namely Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experiments have proved that materials with different fillers respond to the same concentrations of various fillers in different ways. The addition of nanoparticles, without the addition of microparticles, at a relatively low concentration (max 12 wt %), was not sufficient for reaching fundamental changes in dielectric spectrum; only smaller changes of dielectric strength and shifts of relaxations and in relaxation maps have occurred. Out of more pronounced changes, increase of concentration of the SiO2 filler in the epoxy matrix brings about a decrease of electrical conductivity in the resulting nanocomposite. The TiO2 filler had a different impact. Different TiO2 concentrations make their marked appearance in the region between the relaxation and relaxation. The TiO2-filled nanocomposites do not exhibit the unambiguous dependence of electrical conductivity on nanofiller concentration. It can be concluded that the mere addition of nanoparticles, without the addition of established microparticles, does not change the dielectric spectrum substantially. Generally, a serious problem was the production of the nanocomposite with a uniform distribution of nanoparticles. The preparation of such a nanocomposite was not trivial and, in industrial applications, this issue will require a specific focus, so as to avoid the formation of undesirable aggregates. Within the framework of this research, a methodology for the production of an epoxy nanocomposite has been developed with as high as possible uniformity of nanoparticle distribution.
Synergic effects of multistress ageing of electroinsulating materials

Submitted work deals with monitoring impact of thermal and electric ageing on the dielectric properties of insulating material NKN 0887. In the course of the experiment five sets of dielectric insulating materials were aged. The voltage range has been set from 1,5 kV till 2,2 kV and temperatures were 23 °C and 200 °C. The capacity and loss factor has been directly measured by RLC meter Agilent with attached electrode system. The electrode system operates on the principle of a plate capacitor. The values of relative permittivity and loss number has been calculated from values of capacity and loss factor. For easier confrontation has been frequency dependences of these values plotted in a chart. The Cole-Cole diagrams has been created and factors of Havriliak-Negami function has been calculated. Data has been compared with each other and the effect of ageing factors has been deduced.
Multistress ageing analysis of the electroinsulating materials

This diploma thesis deals with not-aged and thermally, electric and multistress aged slotted isolations dielectric properities experimental probing. Dutiny experiment is watched influence moisture on dielectric properties insulating materiále ISONOMŽNMN. Especially both two permitivity complex components are surveyed, in dependence on the frequency and the temperature changes during thermal, electric and multistress ageing. These characteristics are viewed in light of application the isolation in practice.

Prediction of Fracture Toughness Transition from Tensile Test Parameters Applying Artificial Neural Networks

Reference temperature localizing the fracture toughness temperature diagram on temperature axis was predicted based on tensile test data. Regularization artificial neural network (ANN) was adjusted to solve the interrelation of these properties. For analyses, 29 data sets from low-alloy steels were applied. The fracture toughness transition dependence was quantified by means of master curve concept enabling to represent it using one parameter - reference temperature. Different strength and deformation characteristics from standard tensile specimens and notched specimens, instrumented ball indentation test etc. have been applied. A very promising correlation of predicted and experimentally determined values of reference temperature was found.
Microstructure and impact response of high-chromium ODS steels

A new class of ODS steels alloyed by Cr and W is developed as a high temperature structural material for prospective power sources, the fission reactors of IV generation and the fusion reactors. The aim of the work was to investigate the influence of microstructure on the fracture properties of ODS (9-18)Cr-W-Ti-Y2O3 steels. It was found that the increasing in the Cr and W content brought to the steels strength at elevated temperatures and increased upper shelf energy level and shifted transition region towards lower temperatures. The increase in the yttria content led to the decreasing the upper shelf energy and shifted the TDBTT towards higher temperatures. The impact energy of rolled ODS sheet depended strongly on the fracture plane orientation regarding to the rolling direction. The splitting edges profile changed according to the sample orientation and thus the energy portion consumed for the shearing was changed.

Eurofer´97 steel is candidate structural material for in-vessel components of proposed fusion reactors. The use of the steel is limited up to a temperature about 550 °C. On the other hand the efficiency enhancement of the fusion reactors to the level suitable for energy production is predetermined by an increase of temperature in reactor. The long term exposition of the steel at high temperatures leads to microstructural changes. The aim of the work was to investigate the influence of short and long term thermal ageing on fracture properties of Eurofer´97 steel. Short term thermal ageing of the steel was simulated by step-cooling treatment and long term thermal ageing was simulated by isothermal annealing treatment at 550 °C/5000 h. No evident changes in impact properties have been registered comparing the properties of the steel in as-received state and in state after step-cooling. Outstanding embrittlement of the thermally aged steel was observed after long term isothermal ageing.

Short term thermal ageing of the steel was simulated by step-cooling treatment and long term thermal ageing was simulated by isothermal annealing. No evident changes in impact properties have been registered comparing the properties of the steel in as-received state and in state after step-cooling. Outstanding embrittlement of the thermally aged steel was observed after long term isothermal ageing. Risk of grain boundary weakening by phosphorus segregation is very low while the carbide coarsening could led to outstanding embrittlement of the Eurofer´97 steel.
